Salzburg, Austria

Beautiful scenery near Bad Nauheim, Germany, just oustide Salzburg.

(L) Taken from the Mirabell Gardens, Salzburg Castle on the hill; (R) Mozart's birthplace. His residence is also in Salzburg.

(L) I saw a lot of men wearing this traditional costumes, so many that I couldn't tell if they were dressed up or if they were really wearing them. This photo was taken at a huge open air market, the biggest one I've seen. I love the Ithaca Farmers Market, but it's nothing compared to these European ones. (R) This cute little group was playing traditional Austrian music. Loved it.

The Sound of Music Sites
I wanted to go on the Sound of Music tour and Aaron graciously agreed to come along. You can give him your sympathies. It was a little cheesy, they had music from the movie playing on the bus and everyone was singing along.
All the indoor scenes in the movie were filmed in Hollywood, all the outdoor ones in Salzburg or nearby. There is a marionette theater in Salzburg, so it made sense for them to have that sequence in the movie (Lonely Goatherd).
This was the most beautiful cemetary I have ever seen, so many flowers and lovely monuments. This cemetary was the inspiration for the one depicted towards the end of the movie when they are hiding behind tomb stones. That scene was filmed on a set.
This is the lake shown behind the von Trapp residence; Maria and the kids fall into it at one point when they are boating. However, the actual house shown in the movie is not this one. We left our mark here; one of Jack's cars lies at the bottom of this lake. He likes to throw his toys sometimes. I will always think of that little red car when I see this lake in the movie.

(L) The "Do Re Mi" song ends with Maria and the kids on these steps. (R) They also run through this area during the song. Many parts of that song were filmed here in the Mirabell Gardens.
(L) The church from the wedding scene, Mondsee Cathedral. In the movie it looks a lot bigger than it actually is. (R) 16 going on 17 -- seeing this just makes you want to run circles on the benches.
Cheesy, but I enjoyed seeing all these places where they made the movie. Thanks, Aaron!

Dallon's Return

Dallon arrived safely home last night for his 15 days of R&R. This photo of his reunion with my parents says so much. I'm told that as he arrived and this photo was taken, everyone in the [small] airport was clapping for Dallon. He has seen a lot of combat in the past months and been in great danger. How thankful we are that he made it home alive. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers!

Two-Year-Old in the House

Jack, please don't put your toys in my drink.

Our Little German-American

We received Lucas's passport and American birth certificate yesterday (it is a certificate of birth abroad, no state associated). At age 1 month, Lucas is now a U.S. citizen! He doesn't have a social security number yet though. Next month he will travel to the U.S. for the first time.

Lucas had his 1-month doctor visit yesterday. He weighs 11 lbs, 5 oz! (7 lbs, 9 oz at birth) Wow! I told you he was putting on weight, and I wasn't kidding.

Jack Turns Two!

So I made a "road" on top of Jack's cake and put 2 new matchbox cars on top of it, since those are his favorite toys. As soon as I set the cake in front of him, he took the cars off before I could even get a picture.

Opening presents and eating cake. Thanks to all the grandparents for the gifts! (including the ones my mom brought)

Aaron and I gave him a sandbox. We don't have a yard or any grass, but we do have a deck. We wanted something he could play with outside without having to take him to the playground.

Also on July 23 our little Lucas turned 1 month old! He has grown a lot of chub in the past month.

Great Dad

My Soldier Brother

I love this guy. He is so brave.
He is in a dangerous war zone on behalf of the USA while the rest of us are at home living our safe, comfortable lives.

My Precious Boys

Jack likes to sit himself next to Lucas to look at him and touch him. Jack will point and say, "baby." He likes the baby.

The beginning of a great friendship.

I can't believe I'm a mom of 2! I'm loving it.

Lucas is the sweetest little one, a very good-natured baby.
